John Wagner, MD, FACOG
Dr. Wagner grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. After deciding on a career in medicine, he attended the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York. During his time there, he was nominated for membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. In 1987, he also received the Alan F. Guttmacher Award -- an honor recognizing excellence in obstetrics and gynecology. He completed his internship and residency at University Hospital at Stony Brook. He was Chief Resident in 1991. During his time at Stony Brook, he received the Medical Student Teaching Award in 1990, research awards in 1990 and 1991, and the Martin L. Stone award recognizing the outstanding gynecologic resident in 1991. It was at Stony Brook that he came to know and work with Dr. Goldman. Since 1991, he has been in private practice in East Northport, NY. Dr. Goldman joined him in 1993, and they have been in
practice together since that time.
While at Stony Brook Dr. Wagner was privileged to work with one of the pioneers in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. This stimulated a career long interest in and commitment to minimally invasive techniques as it relates to gynecologic surgery. For over twenty years Dr. Wagner has developed surgical methods, published articles, given lectures, presented at national meetings, and taught minimally invasive vaginal surgery and laparoscopic procedures to other gynecologic surgeons. He and Dr. Goldman were the first surgeons on Long Island to be certified by AIMIS, a national organization dedicated to recognizing and promoting excellence in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. Dr. Wagner is currently one of a few surgeons nationwide with extensive experience in single-incision laparoscopy. This technique involves performing an entire operation through a single, small, often invisible, belly button incision. He was the first doctor in the United States to report using the single incision laparoscopic technique to perform a hysterectomy, and he is the only doctor routinely using this revolutionary approach to perform virtually all gynecologic operations. Dr. Wagner is also one of the only surgeons with experience in the laparoscopic management of uterine and vaginal prolapse. Both Dr. Wagner and Dr. Goldman are the only surgeons in the entire metropolitan area skilled in both robotic surgery and single incision laparoscopy.
Dr. Wagner has been associated with Huntington Hospital since 1991. He has served on multiple committees and has been actively involved in quality management and peer review activities. In 2008, he was elected Medical Staff President by his peers, and he served on the Huntington Hospital Medical Board for eight years. He was instrumental in developing the gynecologic residency program at Huntington Hospital. Senior
residents now come to Huntington Hospital from Maimonides Medical Center, North Shore University Hospital and LIJ to learn techniques for advanced gynecologic surgery. He is currently co-Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Huntington.
Dr. Wagner is an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoys tending his vegetable garden while listening to baseball on the radio. He has been married since 1983 to his college sweetheart. His four children and two grandchildren give him endless enjoyment.
