John Wagner, MD, FACOG
Board Certified Obstetrics & Gynecology
Board Certified Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery
Dr Wagner grew up in St Louis, Missouri. He attended Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. After deciding on a career in medicine, he attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. During his time there, he was nominated for and granted membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. In 1987, he also received the Alan F. Guttmacher Award -- an annual honor recognizing the outstanding medical student or resident in obstetrics and gynecology. He then completed his internship and residency at University Hospital at Stony Brook. While there, he received the medical Student Teaching Award in 1990, research awards in 1990 and 1991, and the Martin L Stone Award recognizing the outstanding resident in 1991. He is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and also board certified in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reproductive Surgery.
While at Stony Brook, Dr Wagner was privileged to work with one of the pioneers in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. That experience stimulated a career long interest in and commitment to minimally invasive surgical techniques as it relates to gynecologic surgery. For over 25 years, Dr Wagner has developed surgical techniques, published articles, given lectures, presented at national meetings, and taught minimally invasive procedures to other gynecologic surgeons. He was the first surgeon on Long Island to be certified by AIMIS, a national organization dedicated to recognizing and promoting excellence in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. He is a member of the AIMIS "300 club" which recognizes the top 300 minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons in the country. In 2017, the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), a national organization dedicated to recognizing surgical excellence, designated WGM Obstetrics and Gynecology as a "Center of Excellence" for both Minimally Invasive Surgery and Robotic Surgery. WGM was proud to be re-certified by the SRC in 2019. In 2019, the SRC also awarded Dr Wagner its highest individual certification as a "Master Surgeon" in both Minimally Invasive Gynecology and Robotic Surgery.
At WGM Obstetrics and Gynecology, we are dedicated to providing the most advanced surgical options for our patients. Dr Wagner is currently one of the few surgeons nationwide with extensive experience in both single incision laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Single incision surgery is a technique that involves performing an entire operation through a single, small, often invisible, belly button incision. Single incision surgery results is less pain, fewer complications, a faster recovery, and a better cosmetic outcome. Dr Wagner was one of the first doctors in the United States to use this single incision technique to perform a hysterectomy. He is the only doctor in the New York metropolitan area, and one of the few nationally, to routinely use this revolutionary minimally invasive approach to perform virtually all gynecologic operations. Dr Wagner is also specially trained in urogynecology --- a subspecialty of gynecology that specifically treats pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence. When surgery is required for these conditions, he utilizes the same minimally invasive surgical techniques. He is one of the few surgeons nationwide who is skilled in both advanced laparoscopic and advanced robotic techniques --- this means he can tailor the surgical approach to fit what a patient needs --- not what the doctor is capable of.
A famous physician once noted that we can only achieve great things because we "stand on the shoulders of giants." Dr Wagner is very grateful to those who invested their time and effort to teach him. As a result, he is deeply committed to medical education. He often has OB/GYN residents, nursing students, and nurse practitioner students participating in his office hours. He has been a Clinical Assistant Professor a Hofstra University School of Medicine since it opened in 2012. In the operating room, senior residents and post-graduate fellows from Northwell Health, Nassau University Medical Center, and Stony Brook University come to operate with Dr Wagner to learn the techniques of advanced minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. Dr Wagner has received multiple teaching awards over the years.
Dr Wagner has been an attending at Huntington Hospital since 1991. He has served on multiple committees and has been actively involved in quality management and peer review activities. In 2008, he was elected Medical Staff President by the entire hospital staff, and he served on the Huntington Hospital Medical Board for eight years. He is currently Co-Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Huntington Hospital. Dr Wagner is also an attending at Winthrop University Hospital, and he operates there weekly. WGM OB/GYN and Dr Wagner are proudly independent. We are not owned by any medical organization or health network. The hospitals and outpatient services that WGM uses are part of two completely different health systems --- Northwell Health and NYU/ Winthrop. We feel our independence allows us to utilize the strengths of both health systems to provide our patients with the best medical care.
Dr Wagner is an avid St Louis Cardinals fan and enjoys tending his vegetable garden while listening to baseball on the radio. He has been married since 1983 to his college sweetheart. His four children and five grandchildren give him endless enjoyment.
